Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) and why does it matter?
+
A PDI is a systematic check of your new car before you sign the gate pass and take ownership. Once the gate pass is signed, every defect on that car becomes your legal responsibility, scratches, paint repaints, electrical faults, and documentation issues included. A PDI done correctly takes 20–30 minutes and can save you lakhs in repairs, fraud, and overcharging.
My dealer said 3rd party inspection is not allowed. What can I do?
+
Dealers can restrict third party inspectors from entering the showroom but they cannot restrict you, the buyer. You have every legal right to inspect your own car before signing the gate pass under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Our PDI checklist tool is built exactly for this situation you do the inspection yourself, generate a professional timestamped report, and present it to the dealer before signing.
What are the most common defects found during new car PDI in India?
+
Based on thousands of inspections across India, the most commonly found issues are: repainted panels from transit damage (detected using a paint thickness meter), moisture inside headlight housings, OBD fault codes that were cleared before delivery, tyres with old manufacture dates, VIN mismatches between the invoice and the car, and undisclosed odometer readings above 50 km on supposedly new cars.
Can I refuse car delivery if I find a defect during PDI?
+
Yes, and this is one of the most important things to know. Before the gate pass is signed, you have every right to refuse delivery or demand rectification in writing. You can request a fresh unit if the defect is significant. Once the gate pass is signed, the car and all its problems are legally yours. Never sign under pressure no deadline a dealer gives you is genuine enough to rush this decision.
Is dealer insurance actually mandatory when buying a new car?
+
No. This is one of the most common tactics used by dealers across India. IRDAI regulations give every buyer the right to purchase insurance from any company of their choice. Third party insurance is legally mandatory but you can buy it from any insurer. Comprehensive insurance is entirely optional and can be purchased from PolicyBazaar, Acko, or any other provider. Dealers earn 15–20% commission on every policy they sell, which is why it is presented as compulsory. It is not.
What documents should I verify before taking car delivery?
+
Before signing anything, verify these six documents: the invoice amount matches your booking receipt exactly, the VIN number on the invoice matches the dashboard plate and the door frame plate, Form 22 (the manufacturer's road worthiness certificate) is physically present, the manufacturing date is within the last four months, the warranty card start date is today's date, and the odometer reads under 10 km. Missing or mismatched documents are grounds to delay signing until they are resolved.
Are handling charges and logistics fees on my car invoice legitimate?
+
No. The Supreme Court of India has ruled that dealers cannot levy handling charges, logistics fees, or documentation charges separately these costs are required to be absorbed within the dealer's margin. Despite this ruling, most dealers add these charges because most buyers never question them. If you see any of these on your invoice, you can ask for their removal. In virtually every case, dealers comply when asked directly.
How is PDICars different from a regular PDI checklist I find online?
+
A generic checklist tells you what to check. PDICars tells you exactly how to check it, what a defect looks like, what it means, and what to do when you find one. Our inspection tool generates a professional report with GPS location, individual timestamps, photo evidence, and Consumer Protection Act 2019 language the same documentation standard as a certified inspector's report. It is the difference between a list and a system that actually protects you at the showroom.
